Walkin’ & Swingin’

Three DIVA selections are included the new compilation CD Walkin’ & Swingin’. This once-in-a-lifetime recording, featuring an all-star line-up of musicians, was made at the 15th Annual Mary Lou Williams Women in Jazz Festival in May 2010, which marked the Centennial of the birth of bandleader, composer, and arranger Mary Lou Williams (1910-1981). Artists such as Dee Dee Bridgewater, Esperanza Spalding, Geri Allen, Terri Lyne Carrington, Virginia Mayhew, Catherine Russell, Sherrie Maricle, Ann Patterson, and Grace Kelly perform big band, trio, and small ensemble Williams hits-and hidden gems-such as “What’s Your Story, Morning Glory?,” “In the Land of Oo Bla Dee,” and two movements from The Zodiac Suite. The CD is dedicated to the late Dr. Billy Taylor (1921-2010), Kennedy Center Artistic Director for Jazz (1994-2010), and founder of the Festival (est. 1996).

The CD is co-produced by the Kennedy Center and WBGO 88.3 FM. Order online at kennedy-center.org
